I have an accounting degree from Queens College and passed the CPA exam. I work as a tax preparer during tax season and take tax classes during the off season to increase my knowledge in all areas of tax preparation. As a tax preparer and as a student in college I have helped friends and peers with accounting and other subjects.
I have always enjoyed working with people one on one and teaching them in a manner that fits their learning style. I am an encouraging tutor and am patient with the people I have worked with. I love seeing the people I have worked with get more confident in their command of the subject.
I really enjoy teaching the fundamentals and helping someone master them since they are the key to being able to understand accounting, without an understanding of them it is hard to move on to the later classes. I have found that there is always a way to get someone to understand the basics.
Tutoring Approach/Experience
I like to start out with learning what they need help with. Is it a particular area of the subject, or is it the subject in general? I want them to show me what it is in particular that they don't understand so that we can approach it in a matter that will fit their learning style.
I also like getting a general idea of how well they know the subject in general and finding out which areas are their strengths and which are their trouble spots so that we can work on them as well. I don't want to assume that they have mastered something that they have not.
I like to spend most of the time going through problems or questions depending on the subject, approaching the area in a variety of ways so that they can be flexible and handle questions that may be posed to them in a variety of ways.
I also like to have tutoring clients email me their homework problems and the work that they have done so far with them. It gives me a clue as to where they are in understanding the process and concepts. I like to encourage students to incorporate as many tools as possible to effectively learn the material. It is now possible to make use of a wider range of sources than it was years ago. It is possible to read the textbook while simultaneously looking at material that is the same or similar on the internet. I find that by using more than one approach to learning a subject the student can gain a greater understanding of the subject they are studying.
