Knowing a subject in the humanities or the social sciences, or just writing an essay for that matter, isn't just about knowing a bunch of facts. Rather, interpretation and interpretative skills are key. Although basic knowledge about a subject is obviously important, bridges must constantly be constructed and repaired between new and old knowledge about the subject.
