Hi! I'm Brooke, and I'm a San Diego native. I went away for my education, and the weather and my family eventually drew me back. I received my Masters degree (M.A.) from the University of San Diego and have my Bachelor of Arts degree from the University of California, Santa Cruz.
I've have worked as a tutor, teacher, and mentor for twelve years and have over 2,000 hours of experience under my belt. My students cover a wide age range: I've had the privilege of working with students as young as three and as old as 68! I specialize in math, writing, reading comprehension and fluency, ESL learners (children and adult), organization and study skills, and learning disabilities. Additionally, I enjoy working with college age, graduate, and adult learners.
As a mentor and tutor, I choose to look at the "whole" student- the mental, emotional, social, and environmental factors that jointly contribute to an individual's functioning, performance, and ability to thrive. My background in counseling has given me the tools and knowledge to effectively address these areas. I have seen amazing, positive changes in clients' affects, behaviors, and performance by taking this approach and find great satisfaction in the successes and triumphs of my clients.
Tutoring Approach/Experience
My approach involves engaging with the student on a personal level, getting a solid grasp of where he/she lies with the subject matter, assessing areas of strength and weakness, explaining the material in a manner that is interesting and easy to digest, and facilitating the completion of assignments, test prep, study skills, etc. For some students, this involves assessing learning differences and working with their individual needs and abilities.
It's of utmost importance to me to have good communication with you, whether you are the adult student or the parent, to understand exactly what you feel you or your child needs improvement on and to work hard to ensure success in those areas. Whenever possible, I believe the best approach to tutoring is to teach from the ground up, helping the student become competent on his/her own and ultimately confident in his/her own ability to perform.
No student processes information/learns the same, so a critical part of my job is assessing these individual needs and adjusting my teaching style accordingly.
In addition to tutoring, I have mentored for six years and possess a masters degree in counseling. I have worked a great deal with adolescents, exploring such areas as identity, body image, depression, anxiety, family issues, life skills, goals and dreams, and college planning. In addition, I enjoy working with individuals with special needs (Aspergers, Autism spectrum, ADHD, processing disorders, Down Syndrom, and other developmental disabilities)
