Personal Statement

Hi everyone! A little about me: I graduated in 2004 from Stanford University with a degree in Human Biology emphasizing in Education and Development of Urban Adolescents. I have tutored over 750 hours within the last year alone! While my first tutoring experience began in high school, my professional tutoring experience began in 2007 as a SAT and academic tutor for one of the largest tutoring companies in Southern California. Within a few months, I was promoted to Premier Instructor servicing the company's VIP clientele because of my students' overall improvement, the demand for me as an instructor and my high level math and science expertise. After a few months there, I began tutoring as an independent contractor for families. Since then, my tutoring business has exploded and I continue to love what I do. On my off days, I love spending time with my husband, volunteering with various organizations and laughing out loud. :) My plans for the immediate future are to go back to school, get my masters degree in nursing and work with youth as a nurse practitioner.

Tutoring Approach/Experience

Why I Am A Great Tutor :
Firstly, I have a demonstrated mastery of the subjects I tutor. I am also able to tutor all levels of both math and science which is convenient if the student needs tutoring in both subjects. I also love teenagers! I connect with them easily and I really enjoy being able to help students grow and develop academically and personally. Lastly, I have a high level of intuition. What that means practically is I am able to quickly gauge the type of direction a student needs. I'm extremely personable, approachable and genuine and I know how to communicate complex concepts effectively. I really care for my students and develop long term relationships with them and their families.

Tutoring Approach :
I first evaluate what type of direction a student needs. Does the student need help with the mental stretching that is required to grasp certain complex concepts? Do they need to be less hard on themselves so they can freely approach the material? Does the student need to have someone a litte more structured so they don't fall into the lazy trap? Once I grasp that, we move through the concepts. On a tactical level, we will generally use the course materials that have been provided by their teachers and will go through many many practice problems (mastery of math and science is repetition). I don't do the homework for the student! I support the student and teach them the tools to be successful well beyond the time they will tutor with me.

Note: If you are over 10 miles away, I can provide Skype tutoring and will reimburse the cost of a webcam (up to $50) after the 5th tutoring session.
