I have been teaching Spanish at College level for 15 years and overall for 20 years. I am known as an extremely effective teacher who always raises a student's grade level and brings the right attitude to adult classes where grades are not an issue.I delight in teaching those who think that they are "no good at languages" because everyone is good at languages! It is my observation that learning happens best when the emotions are calm and when we allow ourselves to recapture the playful, curious attitude of young childhood.
My essay writing and creative writing tutoring is based on real life experience. I was a professional publicist for Sports Illustrated Magazine for 7 years, which is where I learned to write punchy, well-organized prose. And I have a parallel life as a professional songwriter, which is the experience I tap into when helping a student find himself as a creative writer.
Tutoring Approach/Experience
I provide structure so that the student can understand what tasks are expected of him and what the limits of those tasks are. I employ flash cards, and extensive repetition of main points, vocabulary and phrases. I believe that information enters the mind best through the medium of a genuine smile.
I have taught large classes (up to 35 people), small groups and one on one. Each type of class requires a modification of my personal approach. Lately, I have been teaching writing and Spanish via web cam and am finding yet more new approaches that make this form of learning quite different and, in some ways, better than live in-person classes. Young people feel quite at home on the web cam, sending chat messages and viewing multimedia materials!
