FAQ for Students/Parents
Finding and Communicating with Tutors
How do I find tutors?
Finding a tutor through TutorSource is easy!
- From the homepage enter your subject and zip code, and click ‘Find’
- All the tutors who match your search criteria will be listed below. They will be presented in order of Tutor Rating; this is determined by their responsiveness, experience, and feedback from clients.
- Find a tutor that you’d like to speak with and click ‘Contact tutor’ button
- The next page will allow you to compose a tutoring inquiry for your selected tutor. This inquiry will let the tutor know exactly what you need. Submit your inquiry.
- After you submit your inquiry, you’ll be shown other tutors with similar credentials to the tutor you contacted. You can select those tutors and send your inquiry to them also, if you’d like to reach out to more tutors. If you’d rather just send your message to the first tutor you contacted, click the ‘no thanks’ link.
I have found a tutor I like. How do I contact this person?
The next step is to submit a tutoring inquiry with that tutor. From the tutors profile, hit the orange button that says ‘Contact Tutor’. The next page will allow you to compose a message to the tutor. If the tutor you selected is available to help you, she or he will call or email you.
What if I have found a tutor I like, but she or he is out of my price range?
Tutors on TutorSource set their own rates. As a result, rates are negotiable. It never hurts to ask tutors if they are willing to lower their rate. If you are potentially a long term client, tutors may be even more willing to lower their hourly rate.
Why are tutors, other than the one I selected, contacting me?
After you submit an inquiry, you have the option to send your inquiry out to other tutors. If you hit ‘Send’ without deselecting the tutors there, they will get your message also.
I have been communicating with a tutor, and have decided to hire him/her. What’s the next step?
After having decided to hire a tutor, the next step is to log into TutorSource and purchase time with that person. When you log into TutorSource, the first thing you’ll see is the communication you’ve had with tutors. Find the tutor you wish to hire and click the green button next to his/her picture that says ‘Purchase’. The next screen will take you through the purchase process.
Where does the tutoring take place?
TutorSource tutors offer in-home private tutoring, so sessions are typically done in the home, unless you decide otherwise. Arrangements for meeting locations and times are done directly with the tutor.
Are there any fees involved with using TutorSource?
TutorSource collects 20% of the funds paid for tutoring, and the rest goes directly to the tutor. This fee is already included in the price you see online, so there are no additional fees or taxes when you hire a tutor.
About Our Tutors
Who are your tutors?
We have tutors with many different backgrounds and specialties, so you are sure to find someone to fit your needs. Our tutors are high school students, graduate students, retired teachers, and everything in between. To learn more about a particular tutor, select that tutors name after performing a search. Doing so will allow you to view the tutor’s full profile and background.
Have your tutors had some kind of screening or background check?
TutorSource uses Crederity to verify tutors’ identities and ensure that they are not in the national sex offender database. Crederity is a company that specializes in background checks. If a tutor is unable to be verified, his/her profile will not be visible on the site. To learn more about Crederity, visit
www.crederity.com . After a tutor has been verified, the TutorSource team conducts an additional review, having the final approval on each tutor profile.
Have you verified your tutors’ credentials?
TutorSource verifies the identity of our tutors and approves their profiles. We do not verify the tutors’ level of schooling or their external experience. However, tutors are incentivized to be honest because TutorSource guarantees your first session with any tutor. If for any reason you are dissatisfied with the quality of your tutoring, just give us a call and we can put that money toward another tutor.
It seems like most of your tutors teach children and adolescents. Do you have tutors for adult learners?
Absolutely, tutors on TutorSource work with students of all ages and academic levels.
I’m Having Trouble Finding What I Need
What if the subject I need is not listed?
If your search returns zero results, we recommend searching for tutors with related expertise and submitting an inquiry for your subject to them. When submitting this inquiry, we also recommend that you contact all of the recommended tutors. Tutors with related expertise and other tutors in your area may be able to teach your desired subject, even if the subject is not listed in their profiles.
What if I searched for a tutor in my zip code, but there were no results?
While TutorSource is a national company, we’re not in every state yet. If you searched by zip code and no tutors showed up in your search results, it means we do not currently have tutors in your area. However, TutorSource is expanding quickly, so be sure to check back with us at a later date.
Price/Payment Questions
Why do tutors’ rates differ?
TutorSource allows tutors to set their own rates. We give our tutors guidelines that help them set rates that correspond with their level of experience. Ultimately, though, setting a rate is up to the tutor. Keep in mind that a lower rate does not necessarily mean a tutor is inexperienced. Many tutors simply wish to offer lower rates regardless of their experience.
Is payment required prior to meeting with a tutor?
Yes, you must purchase time with a tutor prior to meeting. This way we can guarantee your sessions. Your first session with any tutor is risk-free. If you are not satisfied with your tutoring, you will not pay for it.
What is a recurring payment?
A recurring payment is the best option for someone who wants to maintain a regular tutoring schedule. You select the number of hours per week you would like to meet with your tutor, and your payment is processed for that number of hours on a weekly basis. This eliminates the need to repeatedly log into TutorSource to purchase additional hours.
I’m trying to purchase time with a tutor, but nothing happens when I submit my credit card information.
Make sure you have selected an existing student or entered a new student’s name. If you are the student, be sure to enter your own name. If you continue to experience difficulties, please give us a call.
TutorSource Credit and Changing Tutors
I have additional hours, but no longer need to meet with a tutor.
Any additional hours can be credited to your TutorSource account and used toward the next tutor you decide to hire
Can I switch tutors?
Yes, you can switch tutors. If you have been meeting with a tutor and would like to work with someone else, simply let the tutor know you have decided to not move forward with additional tutoring. Any remaining hours you have can be transferred to your next tutor.
What if I am unhappy with my tutor?
Your first session with any tutor from TutorSource is completely risk-free. If for any reason you are dissatisfied with your tutor, just give us a call. We’ll put your money towards another tutor or refund it to you. TutorSource wants to ensure that you find a great tutor for yourself and/or your student.
FAQ for Tutors
Becoming a Tutor
How do I become a tutor with TutorSource?
There are two ways to begin our application process. From our homepage (
www.tutorsource.com), you can click the button that says 'Apply to Tutor'. This button can be found halfway down the page. Alternatively, you can navigate to the ‘Become a Tutor’ tab (above) and click the button that says ‘Apply Now’. Once you click either button, you will be guided through the process of completing a profile and having your identity verified. Once you have been verified and we have approved your profile, you will be able to tutor through the site.
How do I get new tutoring clients through TutorSource?
Students/parents will contact tutors they are interested in working with by submitting a tutoring inquiry through TutorSource. If you have been selected by a client, you will receive his or her tutoring inquiry in your personal email account, as well as under your ‘My Business’ tab on TutorSource.com. You should respond to all inquiries, even if you just send them an email saying that you’re unavailable. Once a student/parent has decided to hire you, he or she will log into TutorSource and purchase time with you. You will then receive an email confirming this purchase, and you will see a new student under the ‘My Clients’ tab.
How does TutorSource make money? Is there a fee for tutors to use the site?
TutorSource is free for tutors. Rather than charging tutors a fee to use the site, we allow you to set your own hourly rate to which we add on a 25% fee. For instance, if your fee is $20/hr, we add $5/hr to this rate. You will be paid the full hourly rate you have selected for every hour that you tutor.
I submitted my profile. Why can’t I respond to inquiries?
Your profile must be manually approved by TutorSource before you can respond to inquiries. This typically takes 1-2 business days. If there are any changes that need to be made to your profile, you will automatically receive an email outlining the necessary changes. Once you have made these changes, we will be able to approve your profile and you will then be able to respond inquiries.
Why have I not been verified?
TutorSource uses a third party, Crederity, to verify identities. Thus, we do not determine who is or is not verified. We can reset the verification test for you as many times as needed; however, if you are still unable to be verified, we recommend contacting Crederity at 866-363-8787.
TIPS: Make sure you are using your legal name and an address that you’ve lived at for longer than 6 months (even if this address is not your current residence).
Why is my hourly rate in the search results and on my public profile different from the rate I selected?
TutorSource always allows you to set your own hourly rate. However, TutorSource adds 25% to that rate in order to cover costs and turn a profit. If a parent/student cannot afford the final rate, you can always customize your rate for a specific student. You can do this when responding through the ‘My Inquiries’ tab of TutorSource.
My Business
Why do I receive inquiries addressed to someone else?
Parents/students send out their inquiry by selecting a tutor they’d like to contact and sending them a message. Once their message has been sent, they have the option to contact other tutors that we recommend for them. Oftentimes, they will send the same message to the recommended tutors, even if it’s addressed to someone in particular. If you are interested in an inquiry, we encourage you to respond regardless of whether or not the inquiry is specifically addressed to you. After all, the parents chose to send you their inquiry.
Why am I receiving inquiries from students/parents who live too far away?
If you are receiving inquiries outside your desired travel distance, make sure that your profile address is listed correctly in our system. Often, we see that a tutor has relocated without updating this address. If your profile address is correct, you may want to consider changing the ‘I will travel’ radius on your profile. To do this, follow the steps below:
- Log into TutorSource and click the ‘My Profile’ tab (this should be the default tab once you are signed in).
- Click ‘Edit’ underneath your address. The inputs to edit your address and your ‘I will travel’ distance will open.
- Select your new ‘I will travel’ distance and hit ‘Submit’.
Keep in mind that you will receive all general inquiries within that distance from your zip code and not that distance from your home address.
Where does the tutoring take place?
TutorSource offers in-home private tutoring, so sessions will most likely take place at the student/parent’s home. However, if the student/parent agrees to another location such as a library or coffee shop, sessions may take place there as well. Remember to never tutor a minor at his/her home without a parent present.
What is a TutorSource rating? How can I improve my TutorSource rating?
Your TutorSource rating is a score that helps us determine who to show in search results. It’s a combination of the amount of tutoring that you have completed and the quality of your profile as determined by us. We built this rating systems to help clients find the best, most experienced tutors in their area more easily, and to help great tutors get noticed. If you’d like to increase your TutorSource rating, make sure to conduct all your tutoring transactions through TutorSource so that you get credit for them in your rating, and make your profile as well-written and relevant as possible. Feel free to contact us if you’d like tips on improving your profile.
